Japanese Toilets: Old Fashioned Not High Tech!
Sep 17th
We know you have heard all about the super high tech Japanese toilets, but in reality you will not always find one of those gems!! Especially, if you are an ALT in the countryside and you have to ride one of the smaller local trains or stop at the smaller stations. I call this old fashioned Japanese toilet “The Pit” since there was no running water, just a big stinky, bug infested hole
We call them the:
Squatter
torpedo
Bobsled
etc.

What to Bring to Japan: Part 1
Jul 21st
We get A LOT of emails from listeners and readers wondering what to bring to Japan. After talking it over with Anthony, we decided to make a little list of items that we recommend. Living in Japan is a lot different than living in the west. The size of apartments is very small, so you have to maximise the use of your space. Since I am into technology, it seemed fitting for me to start out this series with the technology products that I recommend you bring to Japan.

Since you will be spending a lot of time traveling or commuting it is very important to have some sort of media device. I highly recommend getting Apple iPod touch. This is a 5 STAR DEVICE in my book!! It does music, movies, internet, and applications. It can serve so many functions that I don`t think any English Teacher in Japan should do without one! Hell, it can almost take the place of a notebook computer, especially if you can find a free wifi connection. I have mine loaded up with TV shows, music, music videos, movies, games, and other applications. I always bring it to work, so if I have any free lessons or down time I can pop in my head phones and watch or listen to what I like. Also lots of places have open wifi signals in Japan so you can just hop on the internet and surf away. It`s a win win in my book!
The only thing I would add to my purchase of the iPod touch is a rechargeable battery pack/cover. This adds more battery life to the iPod Touch which always makes me happy. Another cool thing about the iPod Touch or iPhone is that you can buy Japanese Language learning applications. There are several out there that help you learn Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. So the iPod Touch turns into a study tool for you, too.
I cant stay enough good things about the iPod Touch!!
